Mercedes ISD is proud to welcome Mr. Armando Martinez as the new principal for Sgt. Manuel Chacon Middle School. Mr. Martinez most recently served as vice principal at the Mercedes Early College Academy.
Mr. Martinez is a graduate of Mercedes High School and holds a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the University of Texas-Pan American and a master’s degree in Counseling and Guidance from UTPA.
He joined Mercedes ISD in 1991, and over his 30 years of experience in education has held roles as a teacher, counselor and assistant principal at Mercedes High School and Mercedes Early College Academy.
“I want to continue the traditions we have here at Chacon Middle School because traditions are important for our community, but we also have to be ready to embrace change,” Martinez said. “We want to, and need to, consistently strive for the best possible ways to educate our youth.”
Superintendent of School Mrs. Maria J. Chavez said Mr. Martinez’s proven track record in educational leadership, combined with his passion for fostering a positive and supportive learning environment, makes him the ideal candidate for this role.
“I am confident that Mr. Martinez will bring the necessary skills and knowledge to be an effective leader and guide his team to maximize academic achievement for all students,” Chavez said.
In addition to providing a safe and structured learning environment, Mr. Martinez said he envisions Chacon Middle School continuing to build a culture where students feel empowered to reach their potential during this important phase in their education.
"Middle school is this great opportunity to assist our students as they move along their educational path and provide them with the tools, encouragement and guidance needed to be the best they can be,” Martinez said. “I always valued my time as a junior high teacher because I saw how we can prepare them academically for high school, but also guide them along the way to reach their potential.”
Mr. Martinez said he recognizes the positive effect educators can have on students because of the lasting impact of his own Mercedes ISD teachers, like Mr. Doug Meyer and Mrs. McGee.
“I’ve had some great teachers along the way who molded me,” Martinez said “They gave me confidence in myself and that’s what teachers do - they inspire.”
Chacon Middle School’s previous principal, Ms. Vanessa Ramirez, has taken on the role as principal at Ruben Hinojosa Elementary School.
