The Mercedes Independent School District proudly welcomed Joette Harding and Marcy Hancock from Texas A&M’s Center on Disability & Development to the Mercedes Transition Academy (MTA) recently. The representatives visited the academy to observe firsthand how the Capacity Building Grant is empowering our MTA students through life-changing skills and hands-on learning.
Led by our very own HMH Lighthouse Award winner, Mr. Orlando Treviño, the tour highlighted the incredible work happening in our 18+ Transition Program. From mastering laundry in our real-life learning labs to clocking in and out for work, and even crafting items for retail, our students are gaining the confidence and entrepreneurial skills they need to thrive after high school.
Mr. Treviño also shared how we help students develop leadership by rotating roles each week—giving everyone the chance to step up and take charge!
One of the Texas A&M representatives stated, “Your staff is doing great things, and we want to make sure this program continues so future students can benefit from the same opportunities. It is so important that we get a chance to speak with you so we can go back and say ‘yes, this is valuable and making these impacts.”
Thank you to Texas A&M for your ongoing partnership and commitment to our students' success! Together, we’re building bright futures and stronger communities.
