Daughter and Father Dance

For one special evening, the gym at John F. Kennedy (JFK) Elementary transformed into a dance hall filled with laughter, music, and cherished moments as daughters and their father figures attended the school’s first-ever Father and Daughter dance.

JFK Principal Melissa Chacón said the idea for the Father and Daughter dance began with a simple conversation among Kindergarten teachers Michelle Martinez, Yolante Balli, and Brenda Villegas-Martinez about hosting a meaningful gathering for families. That conversation brought together approximately 245 fathers and daughters, each stepping onto the dance floor with excitement and gratitude.

“The teachers saw an opportunity to provide a space for fathers and daughters to bond and create lasting memories while also celebrating the importance of family engagement in a child’s educational journey,” Chacón said.

For Tony Anzaldua, father of JFK student Katy, the night was more than a school event—it was a moment that will live on in his daughter’s memory.

“The memory of that evening is something a dad knows his daughter will always remember,” Anzaldua said. “As a dad, I always hoped our school would do something special to bring fathers and daughters closer. In speaking with some dads, all our focus was on our daughters—our princesses’ happiness. Those smiles were everything to us.”

Parents also shared that the evening provided an opportunity to slow down and share quality time with their children in a unique setting.

“The Father and Daughter dance was a great experience,” said Alejandro Trejo, father of Luna. “The time spent with my daughter was priceless. The music was great and had everyone on their feet.”

As families took to the dance floor, fathers twirling their daughters with little hands resting in theirs, the evening also became a celebration of the power of family engagement in education, a key factor in a child’s academic success and well-being.

“When families come together at events like this, we create an environment of support and connection,” said Kindergarten teacher Yolante Balli. “This engagement helps students feel confident and valued, knowing that their families are actively involved in their learning journey.”

Chacón added that the evening served as a reminder of the importance of building relationships and community at JFK Elementary.

“These types of events make the school feel more like a second home," she said.

The success of the first-ever Father and Daughter dance has already sparked hopes that it will become a lasting tradition.

“I know when I’m no longer here, my daughter will have the wonderful memories of that dance,” Anzaldua said. “It was so special to be able to dress up and dance at an event made just for us. I am so thankful for this memory, and I truly hope it becomes a tradition for our campus.”
