Mercedes, Texas — In a proud show of unity and advocacy, the Mercedes Independent School District and the Mercedes Police Department are joining forces to support two community events focused on promoting autism acceptance and awareness.
On Friday, March 28, 2025, at 3:00 p.m., the Mercedes Police Department invites the public to a special unveiling of "Auti," the newly wrapped Autism Awareness Police Unit, at the Mercedes Police Department, 316 S. Ohio Ave. This exciting moment celebrates the department’s ongoing commitment to inclusivity and support for individuals with autism. Community members are encouraged to stop by, take photos, and meet the officers who helped bring this project to life.
The celebration continues as the Mercedes High School Criminal Justice Club hosts an Autism Acceptance Fundraiser on Saturday, April 5, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at HEB Park, 520 E. 2nd St. This family-friendly event will feature face painting, nail painting, games, prizes, food, music, and more. All proceeds will benefit the district’s Special Education and Criminal Justice programs.
“These events are more than celebrations—they are statements of inclusion, compassion, and community partnership,” said Dr. Benjamin Clinton, Mercedes ISD Superintendent. “We’re incredibly proud of our students and local law enforcement for leading these efforts.”
“Our mission is to raise awareness across Texas and beyond, encouraging meaningful conversations and fostering a more inclusive community for everyone,” added Mercedes Police Chief Frank Sanchez.
