Mercedes, Texas — Sudden heavy rainfall on the afternoon of Thursday, March 27 led to significant flooding across the Mid-Valley area, making some roads impassable. As a result, a small group of Mercedes ISD students and staff remained sheltered overnight at John F. Kennedy Elementary School. With safety as the top priority, district officials determined that keeping students at the school was the safest option until conditions improved.
Thanks to the dedication of staff members, the night was made as comfortable as possible. Students enjoyed pizza and spent the evening playing games in the school’s game room, creating a sense of fun and normalcy despite the circumstances.
As rain continued into the night, mats and blankets were set up in the hallway, ensuring everyone had a safe and restful place to sleep. The City of Mercedes played a vital role in supporting the district, delivering cots for additional comfort and staying in constant communication, ready to assist in any way needed. For the students, the night turned into an unexpected adventure.
“It was like a sleepover, and I enjoyed the food,” said fourth grader Jose.
In the morning, staff members prepared breakfast tacos and waffles for students and staff, ensuring everyone started the day with a warm meal.
“We are incredibly grateful for the teamwork and care shown by our staff and the support from the City of Mercedes,” said Superintendent Dr. Benjamin Clinton. “Their dedication ensured that our students were safe, comfortable, and well taken care of during an unpredictable situation.”
By morning, conditions improved, and transportation arrangements were made to reunite students with their families. Mercedes ISD extends its gratitude to the parents, staff, city officials, and emergency responders who worked together to navigate this challenging situation.
